The Story

The Bahia Honda Bridge on the Overseas Highway, with the road riding on top of the old railroad trusses, on a linen card from about 1930 to 1945. Flagler's railroad crossed this channel in 1912 on steel trusses, the only truss bridge on the line, because the water ran 20 to 30 feet deep. The 1935 hurricane ended the railroad, and the state bought the right of way for a road. The trusses were too narrow for two lanes of cars, so the engineers laid the highway across the top, 65 feet above the water, the high point of the drive to Key West. It opened in 1938 and carried traffic until a new bridge replaced it in 1972. Two spans were pulled out, and the east end is now a state park overlook.

Printed on enhanced matte paper in 10 x 8 and 14 x 11 unframed, and 16 x 12 and 18 x 12 framed or unframed.
