The Story
Jasmine Falls at Dupree Gardens, 17 miles north of Tampa on US 41 in what is now Land O' Lakes, on a linen card from about 1930 to 1945. Tampa attorney J. William Dupree opened 25 acres of his estate to the public on December 1, 1940: azaleas, camellias, electric boats on the lake, a tea room, and music piped along the trails. Admission was about a dollar, and some 30,000 people a year came. Gas rationing closed it in 1943, and Dupree hung a sign reading Closed for the Duration. It reopened briefly after the war and was sold around 1950. The limestone ticket booth still stands on Ehren Cutoff, beside a subdivision.
