Flippy, Marine Studios

The Story
Flippy, the educated porpoise, clearing a hoop before the grandstand at Marine Studios south of St. Augustine, on a linen card from the early 1950s. The park opened in 1938 so Hollywood could film underwater through portholes. In 1949 it hired Adolf Frohn, a circus sea lion trainer, to find out whether a dolphin could be trained at all. By February 1951 Flippy rang a bell, raised a flag, towed a surfboard and jumped through this hoop, and the park billed him as the first trained dolphin in the world. The crowd on the card is watching the act that started every dolphin show since.
