The Story
The red waterwheel at Oriental Gardens, on the bluff above the St. Johns River at the north end of San Jose Boulevard in Jacksonville, on a linen card from about 1930 to 1945. George W. Clark, an undertaker turned developer, began planting the overflow from his Riverside garden here in 1925 and opened the 18 acres to the public in October 1937: a sunken garden, stone lanterns, torii gates, azaleas, and chimes that played every hour. Clark died in 1939, his son ran it until his own death, and in October 1954 the family sold the land for 33 house lots. Oriental Gardens Road and the stone steps down to the river are what remain.
