Ostrich-Alligator Farm

The Story
A breeding pool at the St. Augustine Alligator Farm, on a linen card from about 1930 to 1945. The farm opened in 1893 at South Beach on Anastasia Island, where the South Beach Railway dropped bathers, beside a spring whose water burned. By 1922 it was listed as the Ostrich-Alligator Farm, and a 1926 ad claimed more than 6,000 live alligators, four times any other collection, in the years when hide hunters had nearly wiped out the wild ones. Fire gutted the old site in 1920 and 1921, and the farm rebuilt near the lighthouse on what is now Anastasia Boulevard. It is still open there, and the ostriches are gone.
