Pensacola Snapper Fleet

The Story
Pensacola's red snapper fleet at the E. E. Saunders fish house on the Palafox Street wharf, on a linen card from about 1930 to 1945. New England captains started the Gulf snapper fishery here before the Civil War, and the first Pensacola fish house opened in 1872. By 1885 the nearby banks were nearly barren, so the schooners sailed as far as the Campeche Bank off Yucatan, up to 700 miles away, on trips of three weeks, and shipped the catch north on ice by rail. Hurricanes in 1906 and 1926 wrecked the fleet, and the two big fish houses, Warren and Saunders, closed in the 1960s. One Saunders schooner, the Lettie G. Howard, survives as a national landmark in New York. Palafox Pier stands where the fish house was.
