Sunshine Skyway Bridge
$22
The Story
The first Sunshine Skyway over Tampa Bay, on a Tichnor Brothers card from the late 1950s: the steel cantilever span 150 feet above the shipping channel, the long approaches on their concrete piers, a fishing boat below. The bridge opened on September 6, 1954, a 15-mile toll crossing at $1.75 a car. On May 9, 1980, the freighter Summit Venture hit the southbound span in a squall and 1,297 feet of roadway fell into the bay. The cable-stayed bridge that replaced it opened in 1987, and the old approaches became fishing piers.
