The Story
An alligator wrestler at Tropical Hobbyland, the tropical zoo and Seminole village at NW 27th Avenue and 15th Street in Miami, on a linen card from about 1930 to 1945. The pit held fifty alligators and a dozen crocodiles, the card says, and Henry Nelson, billed as the world's champion wrestler, went in unarmed for hourly shows. Seminole families worked camps like this one after the Everglades drainage and the collapse of the hide and plume trade cut off their old living, earning wages and selling patchwork and dolls to the tourists. The attraction closed in the 1960s.
