The Story

Men on the dock over the turtle pens at Key West, on a linen card from about 1930 to 1945. Turtle crawls, or kraals, were pens of close-set pilings where the town held live green turtles for its soup cannery. Local turtles were scarce by 1914, so Cayman schooners sailed to the Miskito Cays off Nicaragua and came back with loads of about 400, and visitors paid a few cents to watch them unloaded. Florida set a 41-inch minimum in 1971 and the imports stopped that year; the green turtle was listed under the Endangered Species Act in 1978. Two pens and a small museum remain at the foot of Margaret Street.

Printed on enhanced matte paper in 10 x 8 and 14 x 11 unframed, and 16 x 12 and 18 x 12 framed or unframed. Framed pieces come in a black, white, or red oak alder frame under clear acrylic, ready to hang; the matted option adds a white mat inside the frame. Unframed prints ship flat. Made to order, so allow 2 to 5 business days before it ships.
