Venetian Pool

The Story
Swimmers at the Venetian Pool in Coral Gables, on a linen card from about 1930 to 1945. The pool began as the rock quarry that built the city. Coral rock cut here went into the early buildings, and the empty pit became an eyesore, so artist Denman Fink and architect Phineas Paist reshaped it into a lagoon with towers, a bridge and a loggia. It opened in 1924 as the Venetian Casino, and George Merrick paid William Jennings Bryan, three times the Democratic candidate for president, to sell building lots from a platform in the water. Each night the pool was drained and refilled with 820,000 gallons from the aquifer. It joined the National Register in 1981 and is still open.
